Our Executive Director, Alisa Roadcup, sat down with Refinery29 to share how RefuSHE is supporting refugee women recover from traumatic experiences through storytelling and how anyone can be an advocate for the most vulnerable.

Every day the young women of RefuSHE inspire us with their stories, voices, and strength. Today, we are proud to share a piece of that through Athiel's profound poetry. 

At sixteen years of age, and in her distinctly tender voice, Athiel expresses through poetry the story of her "lost" childhood resulting from South Sudan's brutal war. Despite being forced to flee her home, the loss of her parents, and the heavy responsibility of caring for her younger siblings, Athiel exemplifies the true resilience of the young women who RefuSHE serves. 

Dear friends,

I am writing to share a bit of news.  I will be stepping down from my role as Executive Director of RefuSHE effective October 28, 2018.  This was a difficult decision as RefuSHE has been one of the great joys of my life, but I know this is the right step for me and my young family.  While there is never a perfect time for this type of transition, I am confident this next chapter will be an exciting one.

Today we celebrate the Day of the African Child, a day that marks the rights and potential of African children. With World Refugee Day just days away, we wanted to bring you a story of a young woman who exemplifies the strength and power of young refugee women.

Last week, we invited you to share in UNHCR Special Envoy, Angelina Jolie’s, visit to RefuSHE in anticipation of World Refugee Day 2018 on June 20th. During her visit, Angelina got to know one of the incredible young women in our programs, Josephine.

On April 12th, over 250 guests attended a one-of-a-kind runway show featuring looks created with fabric made in RefuSHE's social enterprise, a program that fosters leadership and business skills through the design and production of hand-dyed fabrics and scarves.

Every day we are inspired by the hard work, care, and love of the young mothers in RefuSHE's programs. Young mothers, like Chantal who is determined to create brighter future for herself and her son through education…

On International Women's Day, we are celebrating alongside UNHCR Special Envoy, Angelina Jolie, and Harper's Bazaar. During her visit on World Refugee Day 2017, Angelina attended her very first fashion show at RefuSHE's Girls' Empowerment Project campus in Nairobi, Kenya.
