Job description
Founded in 2008, RefuSHE is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting, educating, and empowering orphaned, unaccompanied, and separated refugee girls and young women in East Africa. Based in Nairobi, Kenya, RefuSHE provides a one-of-a-kind holistic support model that includes shelter, education, vocational training, entrepeneurship, and mental health services, to help these young women build healthy and resilient futures. RefuSHE's work is rooted in the belief that every refugee girl deserves a life of dignity and equal access to safety, education, and economic opportunity.
The RefuSHE Communications Intern is a remote position that will report to and collaborate with our U.S.-based Director of Development. The Intern will also work closely with our on-the-ground communications and programs staff in Nairobi.
The Communications Intern will support the organization’s efforts to boost RefuSHE’s brand visibility and bring our audiences closer to our programs, students, alumni, and staff. Specifically, the Intern will play a central role in social media strategy and content creation, engagement and stewardship of our brand ambassadors (i.e. social media influencers), website content management, search engine optimization strategy, and supporting the development of materials, toolkits, reports, presentations, graphics, and blogs. Applicants should have an understanding of and/or interest in social impact communications. This is a paid opportunity and offers a rate of $16.60/hour.
An ideal Communications Intern would exhibit strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and interest in working on a variety of communications initiatives. This role will include the following responsibilities:
Essential Functions
Assist the Communications team in maintaining the campaign’s editorial calendar and brainstorming content for the campaign’s blog and social channels.
Create and edit campaign digital content, including videos, blog posts, social media content, and other campaign materials.
Support our promotional strategy for RefuSHE’s social enterprise, Artisan Collective.
Support the outreach and stewardship of RefuSHE’s brand ambassadors who co-create content and help expand our social media audiences
Help design social media toolkits and graphics.
Support the development of materials, toolkits, reports, presentations, graphics, and blogs
Assist with the communications aspects of US-based events, including donor events and Artisan Collective pop-up events.
Help the Communications team pull data and analyze the campaign’s digital performance.
Support the Communications team in the promotion, measurement, and content of the new website.
Provide administrative support as needed.
Other duties as assigned.
Skills and qualifications
Candidate must be enrolled in a degree-granting program during the internship or must be a recent graduate (within one year of graduation) of a college or university.
Background knowledge in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or International Development preferred.
Applicants should have an understanding of and experience with communications, journalism and/or public relations.
Applicants should have an understanding of and experience with social networking and blogging and have their own presence on social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn.
Experience with data analytics platforms like Loomly and/or Google Analytics preferred.
Excellent oral and written communications skills.
Experience in Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Experience with Adobe Premiere or other video production platform preferred but not required.
Ability to take initiative and be a self-starter.
Strong organizational skills.
Ability to manage multiple tasks.
Ability to work under pressure and handle stress.
Ability to meet regular attendance/tardiness policy.
Must have a personal laptop computer and access to the Internet.
Must be available to work a minimum of 5 hours per week and maximum of 20 hours per week.
