Graduate Spotlight: After fleeing civil war in South Sudan, Linet Yar is creating her own path in Nairobi’ fashion industry
Born in Sudan, Linet came to Kenya at the age of three with her family, fleeing the war that had engulfed her home country. Her family initially settled in Kakuma refugee settlement before moving to Nairobi.
“Growing up, there were many challenges. I couldn’t always access the same opportunities as other young people. Sometimes, life felt like it was standing still days passing by as I stayed home, wondering what my future would look like. Still, I always believed that one day, an opportunity would come my way,” Linet said.
In 2024, that opportunity finally presented itself. A friend shared a link with Linet about RefuSHE’s Fashion and Design Program.
“I’ve always loved creativity the idea of making something beautiful with your own hands. When I read more about RefuSHE, I saw that it wasn’t just a place to learn skills, but a community that supports young women like me. When I received the news that I had been selected and on a scholarship, I was overjoyed. It felt like the beginning of a new chapter in my life,” Linet said.
RefuSHE’s Fashion & Design program gave Linet access to expert instructors, hands-on training, and a network of industry professionals. The curriculum covers pattern drafting and cutting; practical garment construction; dressmaking; applying key sewing techniques such as seams, hems, and finishing; and more.
“At first, I was a little nervous because everything was new to me the people, the machines, even the fabrics. But the trainers were kind and patient. They encouraged me to take my time and learn step by step. Slowly, I started gaining confidence,” Linet said. “Through the Fashion and Design Program, I learned so much more than just sewing. I learned about color, patterns, business management, and even teamwork. I discovered that creativity can be a source of healing and that expressing yourself through art can bring strength and joy.”
Linet graduated in November at the top of her class (see image below) with a certificate that now positions her to seek employment and earn a dignified income. Linet has also launched a burgeoning modeling career, walking the runway at several Nairobi fashion events, including Maridadi Fashion Week, Eco Fashion Week, and Kitenge Fashion Fest.
“Today, I feel proud of how far I’ve come. I’m no longer the girl who was waiting for life to change I’m creating my own path. RefuSHE has not only given me skills but also hope, confidence, and a new beginning.”
We deeply appreciate the support of Together Women Rise, Zakat Foundation of America, and other donors for their generous support of our Fashion & Design program. Their funding has made a direct, lasting impact on promising young women like Linet.
