Development Intern (Spring 2019, Summer 2019)
RefuSHE protects, nurtures, educates, and empowers young refugee women and girls in East Africa through a unique holistic model that provides shelter, education, case management, counseling, child care, legal advocacy, and vocational training. RefuSHE’s holistic program meets the imminent needs of unaccompanied, separated and orphaned refugee girls, young women, and their children.
Founded in 2008, RefuSHE is a U.S. nonprofit with headquarters in Chicago and operations in Nairobi, Kenya. It is the first and only organization dedicated to refugee girls in East Africa. Over the past ten years, RefuSHE has grown to become a leading institution and global thought-leader in the field of refugee protection. Today, RefuSHE is poised for strategic growth and scale. RefuSHE is seeking a dynamic and globally fluent Development Intern for spring 2019 and one for summer 2019.
The Development Intern will work directly with the Philanthropic Initiatives Officer and gain a better understanding of a small nonprofit’s communications, outreach, and donor relations initiatives. The intern’s primary responsibilities will support RefuSHE’s fundraising priorities with additional projects based on the intern’s interests and skill set. The Development Intern will be asked to contribute to all areas of RefuSHE’s work as needed. These areas include fundraising, prospect research, communications, marketing, event support, and others. Tasks may include, but are not limited to:
Fundraising and Communications
Assist in writing thank you letters to funders and donors.
Coordinate social media outreach and campaigns to share general programmatic updates, content/news that relates to RefuSHE’s work, and fundraising-specific campaigns.
Contribute to fundraising messaging that encourages donor engagement at all levels of giving.
Support the development team’s cultivation and stewardship efforts through weekly/monthly “donor anniversary” thank you calls.
Conduct initial research on interested partners (companies and/or individuals) to help the Philanthropic Initiatives Officer evaluate partnership compatibility and value.
Identify and research new potential funders or grant opportunities.
Assist the Philanthropic Initiatives Officer with the Run4RefuSHE running event in the spring. This will include researching running events, coordinating with runner volunteers, and advertising the event on our social media channels.
Assist the development team with donor cultivation events as needed.
Attention to detail and accuracy
Excellent writing and communications skills
Computer skills include Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
Interest in non-profit organizations and the mission of RefuSHE
Positive attitude and flexibility
RefuSHE expects interns to commit 10-20 hours per week to the organization, with occasional evening and/or weekend events. We are flexible on scheduling around classes and other such obligations. Preferred internship timeframe is March 4, through May 31, 2019, but we are open to adjusting these dates as needed.
RefuSHE does not provide stipends for internships, but will work closely with students to see that the internship meets credit requirements.
