RefuSHE protects, nurtures, educates, and empowers young refugee women and girls in East Africa through a unique holistic model that provides shelter, education, case management, counseling, child care, legal advocacy, and vocational training. RefuSHE’s holistic program meets the imminent needs of unaccompanied, separated and orphaned refugee girls, young women, and their children.

Founded in 2008, RefuSHE is a U.S. nonprofit with headquarters in Chicago and operations in Nairobi, Kenya. It is the first and only organization dedicated to refugee girls in East Africa. Over the past ten years, RefuSHE has grown to become a leading institution and global thought-leader in the field of refugee protection. Today, RefuSHE is poised for strategic growth and scale. We are looking for someone who has a passion for social change, aspires to use their talent for good, and thrives in fast-pace growth environments.

The Opportunity

Passionate about marketing? Serious social media savvy? Interested in making a direct impact for refugees? RefuSHE is looking for a talented Strategic Marketing intern to share our artisans’ work and stories through all channels. You’ll work with our Sales & Partnerships Manager to develop content, manage customer and client relationships, and support the evolution of our brand.


  • Social Media: Develop and manage weekly social media plan, collect and record data for monthly analytics report, utilize RefuSHE “voice” in all posts 

  • Design: Curate and organize content and imagery for website and social media, create graphics as needed, research the latest trends and colors in accessories and home décor

  • Market Research: Find local and international opportunities for RefuSHE to share its product and mission, attend retail events, share insights from customer interaction and other successful social enterprise companies, conduct inventory, support with online and wholesale order shipments

  • Other: Pitch in where needed (we’re big fans of teamwork), share your own ideas for ways to improve or grow our mission!

Candidate Profile


  • Working toward or obtained Bachelor’s degree (marketing, communications, journalism, or business focus preferred, but not required)

  • Knowledge of social media & design platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Adobe InDesign, and Canva

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, strong work ethic, and project and time management

  • Able to work consistent hours from week to week in our Chicago office

  • Able to use personal laptop computer

  • Knowledge of or interest in the refugee crisis, social enterprises, and economic development field


RefuSHE expects interns to commit 10-20 hours per week to the organization, with occasional evening and/or weekend events. We are flexible on scheduling around classes and other such obligations.

For the Spring 2019 position, preferred internship timeframe is March 4, through May 31, 2019, but we are open to adjusting these dates as needed.

For the Summer 2019 position, preferred internship timeframe is June , through August 30, 2019, but we are open to adjusting these dates as needed.


RefuSHE does not provide stipends for internships, but will work closely with students to see that the internship meets credit requirements.
